What the Luck

2021

What the Luck is an exploration of the symbiotic relationship between chance, human connection, and the chemical nature of analog photography. Analog photography, often regarded as a medium susceptible to chance, echoes the very essence of human relationships – dependent on external factors and unforeseen circumstances to blossom or wither.

The focal point of my project's narrative is to present different stages of a relationship between two individuals who are separated by geography but linked by birthplace. To achieve this, I photographed a couple of my hometown friends and cooked the film with ingredients chosen by them, imbuing the imagery with a deeply personal resonance.

Through this process, I capture not just images, but the essence of their shared origins mediated by the alchemical transformation. The resulting collages serve as a testament to the profound impact of time, place, and chance encounters in shaping our personal narratives.

Whether following the narrative in its presented sequence or retracing steps backward, the narrative shifts, offering varying perspectives and interpretations. Despite the order chosen, the vivid colors and textures borne from the film's damage serve as a constant, guiding the viewer through the characters' shared experiences and individual stories.
