Secret Visibility

2021

Secret Visibility invites viewers to confront the complexities of domestic violence and provokes dialogue around issues of vulnerability, and resilience. Domestic spaces have historically served as both havens and sites of violence for marginalized individuals. While some find solace and safety within their homes, concealing their true selves from the outside world to avoid further harm, others endure violence behind closed doors. The dynamics of social distancing exacerbated this divide.

Throughout the pandemic, several survivors found themselves trapped with their abusers, forced to choose between confronting the threat of violence and risking exposure to a deadly virus. This dire situation contributed to a stark increase in domestic violence cases reported in Brazil between 2020 and 2021 (Source: Ligue 180 and the Brazilian Public Security Forum).

I used film to capture intimate domestic scenes and infused the film with local ingredients to bind the images to their context. This shifted my perspective, and I began to approach the negatives as survivors in their own right. Delving into the nuances of bruise formation, from initial trauma to gradual healing, I explored how color and shape could convey the passage of time and emotional resonance on the film itself.

The series unfolds as a dialogue between skin and space. The first segment features images resembling bruised flesh, with the original exposures captured within the walls of my own home. In the latter half, domestic appliances and spaces serve as canvases overlaid with the bruise color palette. Through this juxtaposition, I sought to illuminate the physical marks of abuse and the psychological toll of living in an abusive environment.
