Once Upon A Pink Moon

2022

The pandemic has profoundly accentuated our relationship with what we call "home." This prompted me to examine the complex relationship between domestic spaces and the notion of safety. While the act of quarantining offered protection from COVID-19, it also, unfortunately, led to a surge in reported cases of domestic violence in Brazil between 2020 and 2021 (Source: Ligue 180 and the Brazilian Public Security Forum).

Through this project, my aim was to construct a realm without violence, particularly gender-based violence, in solidarity with fellow survivors. The images presented here capture the walls of my own residence, crafted using 35mm film that underwent corrosion through various spices commonly found in Brazilian cuisine.

These white walls anchor the photographs in a Brazilian household, while simultaneously providing a blank canvas, that will be painted by the spices, for envisioning our post-pandemic utopia.

What emerged from these walls were amorphous figures and dreamlike landscapes, a new realm born from deterioration, all bathed in hues of pink. Symbolically, the pink moon represents uncharted territory. In astronomy, it heralds the arrival of spring, a season marked by transition and bloom. Ultimately, the pink moon embodies the essence of change.
